What are the different survey types?

Standard site visit and survey report
A standard site visit and survey report carried out by our PCA qualified Invasive Weed surveyors. Our surveyor will aim to assess the entire garden to look for the visible presence of Japanese knotweed, and where it is possible look at adjoining land. A report will then follow detailing our surveyors’ findings. Where knotweed is discovered, we will provide you with a Japanese Knotweed Management Plan (KMP), detailing options and quotations for remedial works. Cost £299 + VAT (up to 1.5 acres)

Detection Dog Survey
JKWS provides detection dogs that are trained to help find Japanese knotweed and can detect knotweed rhizome underground, even where there is no growth visible above ground.

Japanese knotweed detection dogs may indicate areas of live (also in a dormant state during winter months) and dead knotweed rhizomes and live stems but not dead stems. Dogs may indicate Japanese knotweed covered by vegetation, submerged in water or covered by soil. Areas indicated by Japanese knotweed detection dogs will be then verified by our PCA qualified surveyors.

Capabilities:
a) May detect living and dead rhizomes of Japanese knotweed, including rhizomes in a dormant state
b) May detect the scent of knotweed fresh and living stems and whole plants
c) May detect the scent of Japanese knotweed at a distance of several metres depending on the conditions within the work environment
d) May detect early Japanese knotweed growth before it is detectable by the unaided human eye
e) May detect Japanese knotweed under the ground level, other vegetation and partially submerged in wate

Limitations:
a) Indicate the scent of knotweed and the point of maximum scent. This may need interpretation as scent can occasionally be moved by air currents from the point of origin.
b) Scent will not travel through impermeable surfaces such as floor covered with tiles. However, it may be detected at the edge of an impermeable barrier
c) May not work if there is a corrosive or choking dust or vapour. However Japanese knotweed detection dogs should not be put off by smells and may detect even small amounts of knotweed in the presence of other strong scents
d) Some types of soil (such as clay) may supress the scent more than others
e) Cannot detect presence of rhizomes from dead stems

Where knotweed is discovered or suspected our surveyor will provide a Japanese Knotweed Management Plan, detailing options and quotations for remedial works. Cost £499 + VAT (up to 1.5 acres)
