Why do I need a treatment plan on development sites?

Why do I need a treatment plan on development sites?

The Environment Agency promotes the use of a ‘Knotweed Management Plan’ (KMP) wherever possible on development sites.

Our KMP’s are drafted in accordance to ‘‘The PCA and EA Knotweed Code of practice’, 2013 (version 3).

  1. Japanese Knotweed is a form of contamination and as with other contaminates (i.e., Asbestos or Hydrocarbons) a management (remediation) plan needs to be drawn up and implemented. These plans ensure the correct remedial method and monitoring is employed to remove the problem in-line with the proposed end use of the site.
  2. It can be presented as evidence in the eventuality of any future dispute.
  3. Ensures that all site contractors treat Japanese Knotweed in an appropriate manner as once knotweed is disturbed by either machinery or personnel it becomes much more difficult to eradicate.
  4. Establishing a plan prior to any site works being undertaken and educating site personnel will ensures all employed on the project understand their responsibilities. As a result, knotweed treatment/removal should be straightforward, easily scheduled, and unlikely to escalate in cost.
